Do You Know Why Babies Have More Bones Than Adults?
It is estimated that babies are born with around 270-300 bones.
It is estimated that a healthy adult would have approximately 206 bones.
The difference in the number is because, as the baby grows, some of the cartilages fuse together to form stronger bones.
Typically, all 206 bones in the body weigh about 15% of an individual’s body weight.
Bones are tough & rigid structures made up of living tissues and calcium. They make up the body’s skeleton.
They are the type of connective tissues which turn into bones through a process called ossification.
The process takes place from the 8th week of pregnancy until the person reaches his mid-20s.
Unlike bones, cartilage contains fibers and a chemical called chondroitin instead of calcium. Chondroitin keeps cartilage flexible & elastic.
