What are Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes

Alkanes are organic compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms that are single-bonded.

Alkanes have the formula CnH2n+2 and are classified into three types: Chain Alkanes, Cycloalkanes and Branched Alkanes.

Alkenes are a type of unsaturated hydrocarbon with at least one carbon-to-carbon double bond.

Alkenes have the formula CnH2n and are classified into four types: Monosubstituted, Disubstituted, Trisubstituted and Tetrasubstituted.

An Alkyne is an unsaturated hydrocarbon with at least one carbon-carbon triple bond.

Alkynes have the formula CnH2n-2 and the triple bond is known as the ‘acetylenic bond’.
