Saturated VS Unsaturated Hydrocarbons: CBSE Class 11 Chemistry Notes

What are Hydrocarons: Carbon compounds containing only hydrogen and carbon are called “Hydrocarbons''. Carbon has four valance electrons.

Saturated Hydrocarbons

The carbon atoms are joined by a single covalent bond like |  | -C-C- |  |

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

A double or triple bond links at least one pair of carbon atoms. |   | C=C |    |

Saturated Hydrocarbons

All four valence electrons are linked with hydrogen atoms.

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

At least one pair of carbon atoms are not completely linked with hydrogen atoms.

Saturated Hydrocarbons

These hydrocarbons are less reactive.

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

These hydrocarbons are more reactive.

Saturated Hydrocarbons

They undergo a substitution reaction.

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

They undergo an addition reaction.

Saturated Hydrocarbons

Example: Alkanes such as methane, ethane, and propane are saturated hydrocarbons.

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

Example: Alkenes such as ethane and propene are examples of unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Saturated Hydrocarbons

Alkanes  general formula. CnH2n+2

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

Alkenes the general formula of CnH2n

Unsaturated Hydrocarbons

Alkynes such as ethyne and propyne are also unsaturated hydrocarbons with the general formula CnH2n–2
