Relationship Between Osmotic Pressure and Osmotic Potential

Osmotic Pressure

It is the measure of the tendency of a solution to take in a pure solvent by osmosis.

Osmotic Potential

It is the decrease in the chemical potential of water with the addition of solute to it.

Osmotic pressure is usually denoted as     and osmotic potential is denoted as    .

On adding more solutes to the solution, osmotic pressure increases whereas the osmotic potential decreases.

Increase in the concentration of solute particles, osmotic pressure  increases but osmotic potential decreases.
