Reaction Of Alkali Metals With Liquid Ammonia Equation

When alkali metals are treated with liquid ammonia, a solution of free ammoniated electrons and ammoniated metal ions are produced.

‘Liquid Ammonia’ is gaseous ammonia that is dissolved in water. It is also called Aqueous ammonia.

We know that all six alkali metals from Lithium to Francium have valence electrons.

Thus, these alkali metals readily lose their valence electrons in the ammonia water.

The products formed are hydrogen gas, the metal salt and an amide ion.

This ammoniated solution of alkali metal is extremely coloured and a good conductor of electricity.

Graphite used in pencil is made up of Carbon and the preservative in cooking, vinegar, is nothing but Acetic acid or Ethanoic acid.

The carbon compound available in the form of hydrocarbons is the most crucial compound for all living systems.
