The elements in which the valence electron enters any of the p-orbitals of their shells are called ‘p-block elements’.
There are 6 groups of p-block elements starting from 13th till the 18th group in the modern periodic table.
The 6 groups are : 13th group - boron family 14th - carbon family 15th - nitrogen family 16th - oxygen family 17th - fluorine family 18th group - neon family
The general electronic configuration of p-block elements is written as ns2np1 with helium(He) as an exception.
In the boron family, except boron, all other elements are metallic in nature.
The members of group 14 of the table are carbon, silicon, germanium, tin lead, and flerovium.
The valence shell electronic configuration of group 14 elements is ns2np2.
The ionisation energy of p-block elements increases towards right in the periodic table.
The chemical reactivity also increases in p-block elements from left of the periodic table to its right.
