Names and Symbols of F Block Elements in Periodic Table

f-block elements are the ones in which the 4f and 5f orbitals progressively filled.

f-block elements are also referred to as 'Inner transition metals'.

They are in the 6th and 7th row in a separate panel at the bottom of the periodic table.

The 6th group is called Lanthanides and the 7th group is called Actinides.

The f-block elements in the periodic table are shown below.

Lanthanides contain elements whose atomic numbers vary from 57 to 71 and are 15 in number.

They are  - Lanthanum(La) - Cerium(Ce) - Praseodymium(Pr) - Neodymium(Nd) - Promethium(Pm) - Samarium(Sm) - Europium(Eu)

- Gadolinium(Gd) - Terbium(Tb)  - Dysprosium(Dy) - Holmium(Ho) - Erbium(Er) - Thulium(Tm) - Ytterbium(Yb)  - Lutetium(Lu)

- Actinium(Ac) - Thorium(Th) - Protactinium(Pa) - Uranium(U) - Neptunium(Np) - Plutonium(Pu) - Americium(Am) - Curium(Cm)

 - Berkelium(Bk) - Californium(Cf) - Einsteinium(Es) - Fermium(Fm) - Mendelevium(Md)) - Nobelium(No) - Lawrencium(Lr).

The oxidation state of both lanthanide and actinide series is +3.

Both lanthanide and actinide are highly electropositive and reactive in nature.

Both lanthanide and actinide show magnetic properties.

Except for promethium, lanthanides are non-radioactive in nature whereas all actinide series elements are radioactive.
