Everything About Dialysis: Surface Chemistry Class 12

Dialysis is nothing but a process of impurities of colloidal solution. It separates colloid from crystalloid particles by diffusion through a suitable membrane.

A colloidal solution may get destabilized due to the presence of impurities, particularly electrolytes. Hence they must be removed.

It uses the fact that particles are unable to pass through a parchment or cellophane barrier, but electrolyte ions can.

This process of purification can be achieved by passing the electricity and is called ‘Electrodialysis’.

Since dialysis is a slow process in its normal state, an electric field is used to speed up the purification process.

The kidneys in the human body act as dialysers as they purify colloidal blood.

For a patient who has kidney failure, an artificial kidney machine is used to purify the blood.

The gadget used as an artificial kidney works on the principle of dialysis.

If you have understood the process of dialysis well from these points, share with your fellow mates.
