Different Types of Chemical Bonding: Explained With Examples

Before we go through the different types of chemical bonding, let's understand what chemical bonding is.

Chemical bonding can be defined as a combination of elements to give rise to a new chemical compound.

There are 4 different types of chemical bonds named which are listed below:

– Ionic or Electrovalent    Bond – Covalent Bond – Hydrogen Bond – Coordinate Bond

An Ionic Bond is a type of bond formed when one atom gives one or more electrons to another atom.

An Ionic Bond is a type of bond formed when one atom gives one or more electrons to another atom.

Sharing of electrons between atoms can be defined as Covalent Bond.

Hydrogen Chloride can be considered as an example of a covalent bond, where hydrogen and chlorine bond together to form HCl.

The covalent bond is further classified into Polar Bond and Non-Polar Bond.

A bond that has an unequal sharing of electrons. For example: Hydrogen Fluoride.

Polar Bond

Non-Polar Bond

A bond that has an equal sharing of electrons.  For example: Nitrogen.

A Hydrogen Bond is an electrostatic attraction between a hydrogen atom and a smaller electronegative atom.

Water is a very good example to understand hydrogen bonding in which there is a bond between hydrogen and oxygen.

A Coordinate bond is defined as a bond where there is no mutual sharing of electrons.

The ammonium ion is an example of a coordinate bond where nitrogen shares a lone pair of electrons with four hydrogen atoms.
