Dalton's Law Of Multiple Proportions Explained With Examples

In Chemistry, the statement of Dalton’s Law of Multiple Proportion is:

If two elements combine to form more than one compound, the masses of one element mixed with a fixed mass of the 2nd element form in ratios of small integers.

We have 3 compounds, Nitrogen monoxide (NO), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and Nitrogen tetroxide (NO4).

Example:

The atomic mass of N is 14 amu which remains a constant and the atomic mass of O varies from 16 to 64.

So, N:O for nitrogen monoxide will be 14:16 whose small whole-number ratio is 1:1.

For nitrogen dioxide, N:O is 14:32 whose small whole-number ratio is 1:2.

For nitrogen tetroxide, N:O is 14:64 whose small whole-number ratio is 1:4.
