CBSE 10th Chemistry Notes:  5 Difference Between Soap and Detergent

BY Team Aakash Byju's

Soap is a salt made up of fatty acids. Fats and oils are made up of triglycerides. Three molecules of fatty acids are stuck to a single molecule of glycerol.

Soap

Detergent is an amphiphilic molecule that contains polar or charged hydrophilic groups at the end of long lipophilic hydrocarbon groups.

Detergent

Soap is a long carboxylic acid chain salt, but detergent is a sulfonate or ammonium salt of a long chain of carboxylic acid.

Differences Between Soap and Detergent

Soap is biodegradable, but detergents containing a branched hydrocarbon chain are non-biodegradable.

Soaps don't work effectively in hard water, but detergents work effectively in hard water.

Soaps are prepared from the fats of plants and animals, but detergents are prepared from petrochemical products.

Soaps are  environment-friendly products, whereas detergents are not, as they produce foam that can cause harm to aquatic animals.
