International Widows Day: Changing the Lives of Widows in India

Observed globally on 23rd June every year.

It is observed to raise awareness of the violation caused to widows after the death of their spouses.

In many countries widows are treated badly such as no inherited property or land, thrown out of the house, abused and more.

Earlier, in India, people followed the Sati system. It means that the newly widowed wife had to volunteer to die on the pyre of the dead husband.

But this system was opposed by many people and the act was banned in 1829.

Ever since the abolition of Sati, the lives of Indian widows improved and they were at peace.

A famous person known as Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar worked towards widow re-marriage.

Indirectly, this also encouraged education to girls and become graduates which empowered them to lead independent lives.
