CBSE Biology Concept Notes: What is a Stem and a Weed?

BY Team Aakash Byju's

A flowering plant has the following parts:  Root, stem, branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits.

Stem:  The part of the plant which supports branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits is called a stem.

Generally, the stems of herbs are tender, the stems of shrubs are hard and flexible, and the stems of trees are very hard.

Functions: The stem holds the plant straight; it supports branches, leaves, flowers and fruits.

Stems transport water and mineral nutrients from root to branches and leaves.

Stems transport food materials from leaves to all the parts of the plant.

Weeds Weeds are unwanted plants that grow on cultivated lands.

Weeds grow along with the main crop. Weeds always compete with crop plants for space, water and nutrients.

Weeds affect the growth of the crop. They reduce crop production.

So, farmers remove the weeds frequently. The process of removing weeds is known as weeding.
