Blood Moon 2022: Why the Moon Turns Red During a Total Lunar Eclipse?

A total lunar eclipse (Blood Moon) is seen when the Moon is fully covered by the Earth’s shadow.

This May 15th, 2022 is a total lunar eclipse and the moon will appear blood red. Hence the name 'Blood Moon'.

The term blood moon is not related to any astronomical term, but it is based on the colour of the moon during a lunar eclipse:.

Here’s  why the moon turns red during a total lunar eclipse.

The moon appears red due to the scattering of blue rays coming from the sunlight.

This can be related to the appearance of the reddish colour of the Moon during sunset.

The Moon’s colour may also depend on the sunlight that passes through clear, dusty or cloudy air.
