Endocrine Gland Definition: The glands without ducts are known as endocrine glands.
Endocrine Gland
Example:
Pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, adrenal gland, testes, ovary.
A small cone-shaped endocrine gland present in the brain is called the pineal gland.
Pineal Gland
The word pineal was derived from the Latin word pineal, which means cone. Aaron Lerner discovered the pineal gland in 1958.
It is a small cone-shaped endocrine gland located on the dorsal side of the brain.
Structure and Location of the Pineal Gland
Pineal Gland Location: The pineal gland is located deep in the brain in the epithalamus, where two hemispheres of the brain are connected.
The pineal gland is an endocrine gland found in vertebrates that is the source of the melatonin hormone.
The Function of the Pineal Gland
The pineal gland secretes the melatonin hormone. It is a sleep-inducing hormone.
Melatonin hormone regulates sleep patterns. Sleep patterns are also known as circadian rhythms.
Melatonin hormone production stimulates in the darkness and inhibits in the presence of light.
The pineal gland contains light-sensitive cells which control the circadian rhythms.
So, the pineal gland is also known as the third eye.
