What is Food Preservation? How is it Useful?

Food preservation is where food materials are treated physically and chemically to prevent spoilage.

Food preservation prevents food poisoning and spoilage by microorganisms.

Methods of Food Preservation There are different ways to preserve food. 

These include: Drying or dehydrating: In this process, total moisture present in food materials can be removed, preventing the growth of microorganisms.

Cool Storage In this process, food materials are stored at low temperatures. Low temperature decreases the growth of microorganisms.

Heating In this process, food materials are boiled or heated to a high temperature to kill microorganisms.

Preserving in Salt and Sugar

 In this process, food materials are stored by adding high salts or sugars.

Canning In canning, food materials are stored in glass jars with tight lids.

Importance of Food Preservation Preservation of food reduces the spoilage of food.

Food preservation helps to prevent the growth of microorganisms.

Food preservation is also helpful to transport food materials to distant places.

We can enjoy some seasonal food throughout the year through the process of preservation.
