Root
The part of the plant that fixes the plant in the soil and is involved in absorbing nutrients from the soil.
Types of Root Systems
There are two kinds of root systems – taproot and fibrous root systems.
In this type of root system, one main root and numerous side roots are present.
Taproot System
In this type of root system, all the roots are of the same size.
Fibrous Root System
Functions of a Root
A root anchors the plant in the soil.
Root absorbs water and mineral nutrients from the soil.
Xylem, tissue of plant roots, transport these water and mineral nutrients to the stem.
Some plants store food materials in their roots. Example: Carrot, Beetroot.
Root gives support to the plant. Some plant roots produce new plants.
