Osmoconformers are marine organisms that can maintain an isotonic internal medium to their external environment.
Osmoconformers are of two types. These include euryhaline and stenohaline organisms.
Euryhaline organisms are organisms that can tolerate a wide range of salinity.
Example: Green crabs.
Stenohaline organisms are organisms that can tolerate a small amount of salinity.
Example: Solman, eels.
Stenohaline organisms are found in tide pools and estuaries.
These organisms can maintain the same internal salinity as their external medium salinity.
These organisms have special mechanisms to regulate the salinity of their bodies.
Stenohaline organisms balance the salinity by sending out excess water and electrolytes by diffusion or osmosis.
These organisms also regulate salinity by the intake of water and electrolytes from their surroundings.
