What Are Osmoconformers?

Give One Example

Osmoconformers

Osmoconformers are marine creatures that can maintain an isotonic internal medium to their external medium.

Osmoconformers maintain the same osmotic pressure as their external medium osmotic pressure.

Osmoconformers internal salinity is the same as their ambient salinity.

Osmoconformers are of two types. These include stenohaline and euryhaline.

Stenohaline is an organism that can stand only a narrow salinity range.

Stenohaline

Stenohaline is commonly found in open seashores. Example: Molly, eels, salmon.

Euryhaline is an organism that can stand a wide salinity range.

Euryhaline

Euryhaline is commonly found in tide pools and estuaries. Example: Green crab.

Through diffusion, osmoconformers reduce the net water in or out of their bodies.

Mechanism of salt balance:

These organisms maintain internal solute concentration equal to the osmolarity of the external medium.

The body of these organisms continuously takes in or sends out water and electrolytes.
