A parasite is an organism that grows on or inside another organism.

Parasite

Host

The organism that provides shelter and nutrients to parasites is known as the host.

Ectoparasite and endoparasite are two types of parasites classified based on their habitat.

Ectoparasites are the parasites that live outside the body of the host. Example: Ticks, lice and leech.

Ectoparasites

Endoparasites are the parasites that live in the cells or tissues of the host. Example: Roundworms, tapeworms and flukes.

Endoparasites

Parasites can decrease the host's fitness as it consumes the resources and nutrients of the host.

Effects of Parasites on Host

Parasites may affect the lifespan of the host organism.

Sometimes parasites influence the reproductive ability of the host.

Ectoparasites cause weight loss that can be deadly if the parasite is a burden.

Endoparasites cause damage to the cells and tissues of the host. They cause various diseases.
