NCERT Class 6 Science Notes: What are Nodes and Internodes?

BY Team Aakash Byju's

Stem:  The part of a plant that grows upright and bears branches, leaves, buds, flowers and fruits is called the stem.

Stem and leaves are collectively known as shoot.  A shoot of a plant is divided into nodes and internodes.

Node A particular part of a plant where a leaf is attached to the stem is called the Node.

A node has small axillary buds. These buds may develop into leaves, flowers or new branches.

A node is an active part of a plant where cell division occurs rapidly.

Node is a part where repair, growth and cell divisions take place.

Internode The space between two continuous nodes is called an internode.

Internodes increase the length of the stem. In small-sized plants, internodes are small but in tall plants length of internodes is large.

Internodes don’t produce branches, buds, leaves, flowers and fruits.
