Explained: The Rules of Binomial Nomenclature

Generally, all organisms are given Latin names and are written in Italics.

An actual name has two components. The first word refers to the genus, whereas the second refers to the species.

The genus name begins with a capital letter.

The species' name starts with a small letter.

When the name is written by hand, both words are underlined separately.

When printed the name is in italics. This is done to show that it is of Latin origin.
