Explained: The Role Of IUDs In The Phagocytosis Of Sperms

An Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a tiny, T-shaped contraceptive made of plastic which is inserted into the uterus and remains there.

Copper-releasing IUDs such as TCu 380A, Copper T, and Multiload 375 release copper ions.

These ions function as a spermicide and increase the concentrations of prostaglandins and white blood cells in uterine and tubal fluids.

This results in the reduction of sperm motility and their ability to fertilize.

The phagocytosis of sperm in the uterus is increased by intrauterine devices by preventing fertilization.
