Explained: The 3 Stages of Plasmodium Life Cycle

Microgametocytes (male gametocytes) and Macrogametocytes(female gametocytes) are transmitted during a blood meal by an anopheles mosquito.

Gametocytes (Stage 1)

Male and female gametocytes mate inside the mosquito's gut and develop a parasite called Sporozoite after 15 to 18 days.

When an infected mosquito feeds on people, the sporozoites are transported into the bloodstream through saliva.

Sporozoites (Stage 2)

The sporozoites then migrate to the liver cells, where they develop into Schizonts and release Merozoites.

Merozoites emerge from the liver and re-enter the bloodstream, where they damage red blood cells.

Merozoites (Stage 3)

Bone-chilling and fever are typical human symptoms of malaria caused by merozoites, that destroy red blood cells.
