Explained: Different Types of Placentations Found in Flowering Plants

This takes place in a monocarpellary, unilocular ovary. The placenta forms a ridge along the ventral suture and ovules are developed in two separate rows.

Marginal Placentation

Gram, Arhar, Sunhemp, Moong and Lupin plants are a few examples of Marginal placentation.

This type of placentation is found in syncarpous, bicarpellary ovaries. The carpel walls come together in the centre of the ovary, where the lacenta form a central column.

Axile Placentation

Lemon, Hibiscus, China rose, Tomato and Orange are a few examples of Axile placentation.

This placentation occurs in multicarpellary, syncarpous, unilocular ovaries. In this type, ovules are developed on the inner wall of the ovary or the periphery

Parietal Placentation

Parietal placentation is seen in Mustard, Argemone and Cucumber.

It can be found in the bicarpellary syncarpous and unilocular ovary. A single ovule is found attached to the base of the ovary in which the placenta develops from its base.

Basal Placentation

Basal placentation is seen in plants such as Asteraceae, Sunflower and Marigold.

This type of placentation is found in a multicarpellary, multilocular ovary. In this type, ovules are produced on the central axis and lack septa.

Free Central Placentation

Dianthus and Primrose are examples of Free Central placentation.
