Different Stages of Ecological Succession With Examples

When you're a baby, you first learn how to crawl, then walk and finally run. As your body ages it experiences typical changes with time.

Likewise, when you plant a tree, it first develops slowly before getting larger and larger. In short, it's a series of predictable changes that become noticeable over time.

The following are the different stages of ecological succession:

Nudation is the formation of a bare region due to various factors such as volcanic eruption, flooding, landslides and so on.  Ex: Digging.

Invasion is the arrival of various organisms' reproductive bodies and their establishment in a new location. Ex: Spread of a virus.

Competition is where individuals of a species compete with other organisms for food and other resources. Ex: Corals and Sponges.

Co-action is the referred to the different ways in which one species' life process is affected by the surrounding species. Ex: New invasion of plants.

Reaction is the modification of the environment caused by the presence of a living creature. Ex: Changes in the soil.

Stabilization or Climax is the stage where final or terminal communities become more or less stable for a longer period of time. Ex: Grassland.
