Concept of Micro and Macro Nutrients and Their Role in Plants

BY Team Aakash Byju's

Plants absorb different kinds of nutrients from the soil. These nutrients are known as soil nutrients.

Soil Nutrients

Macro nutrients: Plants require some nutrients in a large quantity. These are known as macro nutrients. Example: Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium.

They include macro nutrients and micro nutrients:

Helps in the formation of new leaves and flowers.

Role of different macronutrients in plants:

Nitrogen

Helps to penetrate roots deep into the soil to absorb nutrients.

Phosphorus

Provides pest resistance and increases the quality of smell, colour and taste of fruits.

Potassium

Plants require some nutrients in tiny quantities. These are known as micro nutrients. Example: Iron, Copper, Manganese, Boron, Chlorine, Zinc.

Micro Nutrients

Iron: Plants need Iron for photosynthesis and chlorophyll synthesis.

Role of different micro nutrients in plants:

Iron

Copper is required in seed production.

Copper

Manganese is useful in growth and development.

Manganese

Plants need Boron to form the cell wall and other membranes.

Boron

It plays a major role in the opening and closing of stomata.

Chlorine
