BY Team Aakash Byju's

Leaf A green, expanded, broad part of a plant that prepares food is called a leaf.

The leaf is an important part of a plant because it performs photosynthesis, which is essential for the survival of both plants and animals.

The main parts of the leaf are the petiole, lamina and veins.

Petiole The part of the leaf attached to the stem is the petiole. It is a thin stalk that attaches a leaf to a plant.

Functions Petiole joins the leaf to the stem.

It can twist the leaf to turn towards sunlight. It gives support to leaves.

Lamina The expanded and broad part of the leaf is the lamina.

Lamina is a thin and flat part of the leaf. It contains chlorophyll, therefore involved in photosynthesis. Lamina has veins. These veins extend from base to tip of the leaf.

Functions It prepares food materials by the process of photosynthesis. It has veins that supply water and mineral nutrients to all lamina cells.
