Mycorrhiza A fungal association with the roots of plants is known as mycorrhiza.

The soil fungi, called the mycorrhiza, grow in symbiosis with about 90% of plant roots.

The plant roots provide the sugar required for the growth of mycorrhiza.

In reverse, the fungus explores the soil and delivers water and nutrients, including Phosphates, Zinc, Copper, etc., which are not easily available to plants.

Types of Mycorrhiza  The mycorrhizal association is of two kinds. These are - Endomycorrhizae - Ectomycorrhizae.

Endomycorrhizae  A mycorrhizal association that grows inside the plant roots.

Ectomycorrhizae  A mycorrhizal association that grows outside the plant roots.

Advantages of Mycorrhiza  Mycorrhiza enlarges the rooting zone of plants and enters tiny soil pores, which plant roots cannot access.

The mycorrhizal association helps absorb nutrients from the soil and deposit them into organic matter, thus stabilising the soil structure.
