The retention of desirable traits or the elimination of undesirable traits can be achieved through inbreeding.
Outbreeding refers to the mating of members of different populations, breeds or species.
Example: When a child is born to two unrelated people.
Outbreeding is helpful to promote an increase in phenotypic variability within a population
Crossbreeding refers to the mating of members of two different breeds, varieties or populations.
Example: Crossbreeding of Yorkshire and Duroc pigs.
Crossbreeding is used to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of potential breeds and select those that complement each other.
