Watching a solar eclipse with naked eyes often damages Eyesight, Iris and pupil too. It can lead to permanent vision disability.
The sunlight in addition to the visible white light also contains some harmful infrared & ultraviolet radiations.
The iris expands to contract the pupil to prevent our eyes from the intense brightness of the sunlight.
The sun is partially or completely covered by the moon misleading us to understand that there is no intense light from the sun.
Thinking there is no intense light from the sun, our pupils remain as it is & do not contract which allows the entire sunlight to pass into our eyes for a long time.
Since pupils do not contract, it allows all (harmful) radiations of sunlight to enter our eyes and they could cause severe damage to the retina.
When the sun covered by the moon comes out from behind the moon, the radiation directly falls into our eyes without being given a chance to look away.
