10 World’s Most Endangered Species

As per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), these 10 species are believed to be under threat of extinction.

JAVAN RHINOS

Javan rhinos, native of south-east Asia, are on the verse of extinction due to hunting and habitat loss. There are around 75 Javan rhinos left which can only be found on the island of Java, Indonesia.

AMUR LEOPARD

The Amur leopard, critically endangered since 1996, are found in the remote regions of Russia and China at present. There are around 100 Amur leopards left in the wild.

SUNDA ISLAND TIGER

The Sunda Island tiger, also known as the Sumatran tiger, are only found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It's estimated that there are around 600 Sumatran tigers left in the wild.

MOUNTAIN GORILLAS

The Mountain gorillas are found in the high-altitude forests of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. With just over 1,000 individuals in the wild, they are currently listed as endangered species.

TAPANULI ORANGUTAN

The Tapanuli orangutan was listed as a distinct species in 2017. Only a single, isolated population of Tapanuli orangutans exist in the wild, restricted to Batang Toru forests in Sumatra, Indonesia.

YANGTZE FINLESS PORPOISE

The Yangtze Finless Porpoise, the only living freshwater porpoise, resides in the Yangtze River in China and is a critically endangered species. There are around 1,000 individuals left in the wild.

BLACK RHINOS

Due to large-scale poaching, the population of black rhinos declined dramatically. There are around 5,630 black rhinos left in the wild and are listed as critically endangered.

AFRICAN FOREST ELEPHANT

African forest elephants are found in the dense, humid forests of West and Central Africa. Over the past 31 years, their numbers have declined by an estimated 86%.

SUMATRAN ORANGUTAN

The Sumatran orangutan are exclusively on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. There are less than 14,000 Sumatran orangutans left in the wild and are listed as critically endangered.

HAWKSBILL TURTLES

The Hawksbill turtles are found in the waters of the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Pacific Ocean. In the last 30 years, their numbers have reduced by at least 80%.
