10 Rules for Writing Numbers in Words

Do you know how exactly the numbers have to be expressed in words? Let us see 10 important rules to write the numbers in words:

Rule 1

Start with spelling out all the numerals.

Example:

 I saw  Twenty-five birds  during sunset.

 A hyphen should be included for all compound numbers and fractions.

Rule 2

    All numbers from twenty-one through ninety-nine     Fractions like three-fourth.

100 rupees, 50 dollars, 25 cents, etc.

Example:

Units need not be used writing the figures in words.

Rule 4

when writing time, then use noon or midnight rather than AM or PM and use o’clock.

Twelve noon, five o’clock in the evening, etc.

 Mixed fractions can be expressed as numbers unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.

She got a pay raise of 1½ percent Two and one-half percent was the expected pay raise.

Rule 6

Use the simplest way to express a larger number. Like 10 lakhs = 1 million

“she has one thousand five hundred pages to read” can be written as “she has fifteen hundred pages to read”

Example:

 While writing a larger number, we should not use the word “and” but it can be used to express the decimal points after the number.

     12,532 - twelve thousand five hundred thirty-two      134.2 - one hundred thirty-four and two tenths

Rule 8

You may be using a comma for writing the numbers with more than 3 digits, but in words, you should not use the comma.

Incorrect - two thousand, five hundred, twenty-one Correct - two thousand five hundred twenty-one

Example:

While spelling dates, suffixes like -th, -rd, -st are used.

June first, August fifth, May third, etc.

Example:

 While writing decades, do not capitalise them.

I prefer songs from the eighties over the nineties.
