How to prepare for Board Exams and JEE Simultaneously?

In less than a couple of months, many students will appear for two of the most important exams in their career, the 12th Board Exams, and the JEE Mains, popularly known as IIT JEE. The pressure is already rising, and some students may underestimate the gravity of the situation considering both the exams are almost back to back. Students often oscillate from preparing for one exam to another without understanding the fundamentals of each.

So, exactly how to prepare for IIT-JEE along with the board exams, here are a few tips.

Smart Planning is Important to Study Well

Devising a strategy is the first and foremost thing you should do before anything else. Time should be your asset and not a liability. Organize your day, and give weightage to each subject. Effective time management is crucial and will prepare you mentally. Formulate a plan on a piece of paper and stick it on your study table. Never overload yourself exponentially and beyond your abilities; although, it is advisable to push yourself now and then to test your strengths. Take breaks after long hours of study and rejuvenate your mind for a fresh start later.

Have a Clear Understanding of Fundamentals and Theory

Have a clear understanding of the fundamentals involved in all the chapters; it is the key to success in both the exams. The basic concepts of every topic remain the same. Since, both the exams have a similar syllabus, you can understand the working of a concept easily. While IIT-JEE has more sophisticated application of concepts, the theory remains the same. NCERT books are a good resource to help you bridge the gap between fundamentals and tricky questions. Write formulas in a notebook on each topic, and refer to them while preparing for JEE.

Cover Every Topic of the Syllabus

A student does not have the luxury of missing out a single topic while preparing for board exams and IIT-JEE. Since, IIT- JEE requires a minimum percentage in board exams to appear for the JEE, one cannot take a chance of leaving out a single topic. A brief look at the previous year question papers of both exams will give you a hint that all topics are covered, and it is essential to prepare for everything.

If you are struggling with difficult topics, consult a teacher or a friend. The syllabus for the both exams is almost same. IIT-JEE does include tougher application of concepts, but the fundamentals remain the same. Consult the official website for JEE and make sure you have the correct syllabus.

   Revise Well for Effective Preparation

No preparation is complete without revision. Previous year board toppers swear by the importance of revision while preparing for both exams. A revision can make or break your chance of securing a better seat and a better score. It is advisable to revise after completing a topic. Revision is vital after writing the board exam since boards follow a subjective pattern and you can edit your mistakes. Revision will help you assess your abilities better and make you more confident. Rank your goals and assign more time to the chapters that have a higher weightage in JEE. It is advisable to write the theoretical answers while revising to get a gist of the board exams.

Get Acquainted With the Latest Exam Pattern

Board exams and IIT-JEE highly differ from each other in the way they are conducted. Preparing for both the exams simultaneously can be challenging. IIT-JEE is an objective exam with multiple choice questions, while the board exams are subjective. Bridge the gap by assigning weightage to each of the exams. Practice application of concepts and numerical questions for IIT more, and be more theory oriented for board exams.

   Practice Mock Papers

Practicing mock papers and previous year papers will acquaint you with the character of both the exams. Be strict on the clock and refrain from distractions. It is wise to practice previous year board exam papers to help you prepare better. Always practice mock papers in full spirit and treat them like an actual exam to get the maximum benefit. Evaluate your performance and then work on your weaker areas. If you are significantly lacking in one of the topics, then assign more time to it and consult a teacher if you are not able to grasp the same.
